Women's Circles

A Women's Circle is a healing space where women gather in order to heal, witness & support one another. It is a safe and sacred space for women to come together, use their voices, to be heard and to be seen. Women have gathered in circles since Palaeolithic times, and there is evidence of it shown throughout history, whereby which the spaces have been used to empower each other and share wisdom.

What is Women's Circles?

In a women's circle, sometimes referred to as a red tent, moon lodge, or a goddess circle, women gather and are given the space to speak freely without judgement or expectation. Typically held on a full moon in honour to the monthly menstruation cycle, women come together and devote time to ritualistic practice such as chanting / singing, cleansing, energy healing, or just simply holding a safe space for one another.

History

Historically, throughout time, women gathered in red tents, moon lodges, or sacred held spaces to connect, confide, and come together. Groups like the pagans and Celtic Christian women of the 5th and 6th centuries, like Jewish women during 'Rosh Chodesh', like Wiccan women in the 20th century, gathered away from the rest of society to share, socialise, and pass on traditions and wisdom. With the fire at the centre, and facilitated by a medicine woman who would teach lessons about the seasons and stars, women circled the light and the warmth and created a place to share stories, cook meals, honour the gods and goddess, and dance under the stars. However, women from various societies began to be persecuted for participating in these circles, such as those who were accused of witchcraft, and it slowly became outlawed to practice these sacred ceremonies over time. It wasn't until the mid to late 1900s that women's circles began to be practiced again, and have brought the importance of women-centric spaces and back into light.
